FAQ · Reamer Research and Reamer Server: what they are and who they fit

What are the best Backtrader alternatives in 2026?

Backtrader's last release was in April 2023. backtesting.py is the simplest step for one instrument. bt suits portfolio rebalancing, vectorbt suits parameter sweeps, and NautilusTrader and LEAN cover ticks, more asset classes and live trading. Reamer Research from Reamer Labs is a paid engine library for strategies on bars, and it keeps Backtrader's bar-by-bar shape. In a published benchmark on 500,000 bars, Backtrader took 15.04 s and Reamer Research took 3.38 s from Python.

Backtrader is a free Python framework with years of tutorials and a simple next() method that runs on every bar. It has not had a release since April 2023.

Why traders look for Backtrader alternatives

  • Maintenance. The last PyPI release, 1.9.78.123, came out in April 2023. The package metadata lists Python versions only up to 3.7, and backtesting.py's own list of alternatives files it under obsolete or unmaintained.
  • Costs that are off by default. Its default broker starts with zero slippage, and commission is something you configure.
  • Older live connectors. Live trading through Backtrader relies on connectors from its active years.
  • Speed on big runs. It runs entirely in Python, which adds up across long intraday histories and parameter sweeps.

Closest to how Backtrader works

  • backtesting.py has the same bar-by-bar idea and a smaller API, with interactive charts. It trades one instrument per strategy, so a Backtrader strategy with several data feeds will not port directly.
  • Reamer Research calls your strategy on every bar, from Python or C++, and returns every order, fill and closed trade. Spread, slippage, commission, overnight swap and margin are set per instrument. A public execution specification states how orders fill. It has no charts, ready indicators or analyzers of the kind Backtrader ships, and it runs on Linux x86-64 and on macOS on Apple Silicon, with no Windows version. See How does Reamer Research compare with Backtrader?

Different models

  • bt builds a strategy from allocation blocks. It suits rebalancing a portfolio more than order-level trading rules.
  • vectorbt tests large parameter grids on whole arrays. Rules that depend on the current position or on bracket orders are harder to express.

Larger platforms

  • NautilusTrader has a Rust core and Python strategies, and the same code runs in backtest and live. Its README warns that breaking changes can occur between releases.
  • LEAN is the engine behind QuantConnect, and you can run it locally with your own data.
  • Zipline Reloaded is for existing Zipline code. Its maintainers now point new projects to ML4T Backtest.

What a published benchmark measured

What a Backtest Costs ran four engines on the same strategies and data, on one AMD EPYC 9575F on 2026-10-25. This is one backtest of a 20-bar breakout on 500,000 bars, with no commission, spread or slippage.

Backtrader finished ahead of LEAN and stock NautilusTrader, and behind patched NautilusTrader and Reamer Research. Your own indicators and any model inside the loop also count in every engine.

The study's author builds and sells Reamer Research, so the runners and raw results are public and you can check every figure. It is one machine, one date, one instrument and two simple strategies. It did not test backtesting.py, bt, vectorbt or Zipline.

What are the best backtesting.py alternatives in 2026?backtesting.py is a good small library for testing one strategy on one instrument, so the best alternative depends on what you have outgrown. For several instruments in one strategy, look at Backtrader or bt. For large parameter sweeps, vectorbt. For ticks, order books and live trading, NautilusTrader or LEAN. For strategies on bars with a written fill specification and modelled costs, Reamer Research is a paid engine library from Reamer Labs. If one instrument is enough, backtesting.py is still maintained and may be all you need. How does Reamer Research compare with Backtrader? Both run a strategy one bar at a time against historical data. Backtrader is a free, open-source Python framework whose last release was in April 2023; costs and slippage are settings you add. Reamer Research is a paid, compiled engine with a written execution specification, costs modelled by default, byte-identical runs per seed and active maintenance. In a published four-engine benchmark, 500,000 bars took Backtrader 15.04 s and Reamer Research 3.38 s from Python. Backtrader is fine for a first look at an idea; Reamer Research is for results you need to trust and repeat. Why is my Python backtest so slow?Usually because a Python loop does expensive work on every bar, and that cost is multiplied by every bar and every run. Reading a value through pandas inside the loop is often the largest part. In one test, reading a single column row by row took about 12 seconds per 500,000 bars with iterrows and about 0.06 seconds with a NumPy array. Profile first, move data out of pandas before the loop, precompute what you can, run sweeps in separate processes, and move the loop to compiled code only if that is still not enough. What is Reamer Research?Reamer Research is a deterministic research engine for mid-frequency quants. It is a library with a stable C interface that you call from Python, C++ or any language that can call C, on your own machine. It tests a strategy, diagnoses it trade by trade, sweeps it, reports it, and sends its orders live to Reamer Server. The same data, settings and seed give byte-identical results every run. It costs $1,800 per seat per year, with a $225 30-day trial. How much do Reamer Research and Reamer Server cost?Reamer Research is USD 1,800 per seat per year, and Reamer Server is USD 7,200 per seat per year. Each is paid once for the year and nothing renews automatically. A 30-day trial costs USD 225 for Reamer Research and USD 900 for Reamer Server. A seat is one product on one machine.
